Kaaterskill Falls is the highest cascading waterfall in New York State, dropping over 260 feet in two tiers, and it’s one of the most visited natural landmarks in the Catskills. If you’re mapping out a trip to the region, it’s worth building your itinerary around this stop.
Here’s what to know about the hike, and how to pair it with a weekend in Windham, NY.
The Hike
The trail to the falls is an out-and-back route of about 1.4 miles roundtrip, starting off County Route 18 in Haines Falls. It’s a moderate hike suitable for most fitness levels, though the terrain near the top is rocky and can be slippery, particularly after rain. Sturdy footwear is recommended.
From the upper section of the trail, hikers get views of the Hudson River Valley below. Plan for roughly 1 to 3 hours to complete the hike at a comfortable pace.
History
Kaaterskill Falls has drawn visitors for centuries and holds significance beyond its size. It’s referenced in Washington Irving’s Rip Van Winkle, was painted by Thomas Cole (founder of the Hudson River School of Art), and is considered a sacred site by the Mohican people, who called the Catskills home.
Tips for Visiting
- Parking: Roadside parking along Route 23A is prohibited and enforced; illegally parked vehicles are ticketed and towed. Park instead at the Mountain Top Historical Society or North/South Lake State Campground and follow signage from there.
- Stay on the marked trail. Unofficial paths near the falls are a common cause of injuries and erosion.
- Avoid climbing on the rocks around or under the waterfall — the surfaces are slicker than they appear, and swimming isn’t recommended.
- Pack out what you pack in. There’s a fine for littering in the Catskills.
- No glass or campfires are permitted at the site.
Where to Stay
Kaaterskill Falls works well as the first stop of a Catskills weekend rather than a quick detour on the way home. After the hike, Windham, NY is a short drive away and makes a convenient base for the rest of the trip. Hotel Vienna sits on more than 9 acres with direct access to the Windham Path, offering an easy way to unwind after a morning on the trail.
