If you live in New York City, the Catskills are one of those places that always seem to be “next weekend’s plan” — until they finally become this weekend’s plan. Good news: they’re closer than you think. Windham, NY sits about two and a half hours north of Manhattan, which means you can leave after your Friday coffee and be hiking a mountain trail by lunchtime.
This is the itinerary we’d hand a friend who texted us “I need to get out of the city, where do I go?” Print it, screenshot it, pin it — whatever gets you in the car.
Getting There
Take the New York State Thruway north, then cut over toward Route 23 into Greene County. It’s a straightforward drive — no white-knuckle mountain passes, just increasingly green scenery and increasingly good radio silence. Leave by mid-morning on a Friday and you’ll beat both the traffic and the sunset.
Friday: Arrive and Unwind
Check into Hotel Vienna, set on more than 9 acres with direct access to the Windham Path. Drop your bags, and before you do anything else, walk the path. It’s an easy 1.5-mile loop past a covered bridge and open fields — the kind of low-effort scenery that immediately resets a Friday-brain still thinking about Slack notifications.
For dinner, keep it simple and local. Windham’s Main Street has more good food than a town this size has any right to, from classic Italian to farm-to-table spots. Come back to the property afterward, grab a seat by the fire pit, and let the first night do its job.
Saturday: The Outdoors Day
This is what you drove up for. Windham has hiking for every mood:
- Something easy: Loop the Windham Path again, this time with your camera. It’s a favorite for spotting wildflowers, birds, and — depending on the season — fall color.
- Something with a view: Head toward the Catskills Escarpment Trail. Acra Point and Windham High Peak are both reachable day hikes with panoramic payoffs.
- Something on wheels: Elm Ridge Wild Forest has miles of looped trails that work well for mountain biking if you’d rather cover ground than climb it.
Golfers should carve out a few hours at Windham Country Club near the hotel. Non-hikers, non-golfers — the farmers market (seasonal) and the local shops on Main Street are an easy way to fill an afternoon without breaking a sweat.
By evening, you’ll want the hot tub. This is not optional advice, this is doctor’s orders.
Sunday: Slow Morning, Slower Drive Home
Don’t rush Sunday. Take the mountain deck coffee-in-hand, let the trip end the way it started — quietly. If you’re not ready to leave the outdoors behind, one more short walk on the Windham Path is the easiest way to stretch the weekend a little longer before pointing the car back toward the city.
Why Windham Beats a Generic “Upstate” Trip
Plenty of towns bill themselves as an easy escape from NYC. Windham’s advantage is that it doesn’t make you choose between adventure and doing nothing — the mountain, the trails, and the golf course are five minutes from a hotel room where doing absolutely nothing is just as encouraged.
Planning your own Catskills weekend? Book your stay at Hotel Vienna and start the trip with a home base that’s already three minutes from everything on this list.
