The Ultimate Guide to Windham, NY

Things to Do in Every Season

Windham sits about two and a half hours north of New York City, tucked into the Northern Catskills at roughly 2,000 feet above sea level. It used to be known mainly as a ski town — and it’s still an excellent one — but Windham has quietly become a true year-round destination, with world-class trails, a genuinely good restaurant scene, and enough small-town charm to make you cancel your Sunday-afternoon drive home.

This is the guide we wish existed before our first trip: everything worth knowing about Windham, organized by season, so you can plan around whatever kind of weekend you’re after. Bookmark it, pin it, come back to it every time you’re due for a mountain reset.

Winter: Skiing, Snowshoeing, and Fireside Nights

Winter is Windham’s headline season, and it earns the reputation. Windham Mountain Club runs from roughly December through March, with 54 trails, 1,600 feet of vertical drop, multiple terrain parks, and night skiing on weekends — genuinely impressive numbers for a Catskills resort. The mountain is also known for one of the region’s better adaptive snow sports programs, with options including two-track, three-track, bi-ski, and mono-ski setups.

Not skiing? You’ve still got options. The Windham Path — a flat, gravel, multi-use trail right off the property, turns into a popular snowshoeing and cross-country skiing route once the snow settles in. It’s an easy way to get outside without strapping into anything technical.

Staying at Hotel Vienna makes winter logistics easy — the property runs a complimentary ski shuttle to Windham Mountain on weekends and holidays, so you can leave the car parked and let someone else deal with the lift-line traffic. Beyond downhill skiing, the area offers snowboarding, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and snow tubing, so non-skiers in your group have plenty to do too.

After a day on the mountain, this is where a hot tub and a fire pit stop being amenities and start being the entire point of the trip.

Spring: The Quiet Season

Spring in the Catskills doesn’t get the marketing budget that fall and winter do, and honestly, that’s part of its appeal. Trails reopen, the crowds thin out, and the town slows to a genuinely relaxed pace. An excellent window for a quiet weekend, a stop at Partridge’s for fresh maple syrup (they’ve been making it since 1898), and restaurant reservations that don’t require advanced planning.

Summer: Hiking, Golf, and Farmers Markets

Summer opens Windham back up completely. Warm days and cool evenings make it ideal hiking weather, with trails ranging from the easy Windham Path loop to more demanding routes through Elm Ridge Wild Forest, popular with both hikers and mountain bikers — Windham’s mountain bike park has been ranked among the top 5 bike parks in the Northeast. Golfers have Windham Country Club a quarter mile from Hotel Vienna, and the Windham Farmers Market runs throughout the growing season, showcasing local makers and growers on rotating weekends.

For something a little slower-paced, spend an afternoon at The Vineyard at Windham, a family-owned winery offering everything from a simple wine flight to a full guided tour, plus a cheese and charcuterie board to go with it. It’s an easy pairing with a hiking day — start on the trail, end with a glass of wine.

Summer is also the season to just wander Main Street — the quilt shop, the home goods stores, the small-batch spa products — the kind of unhurried browsing you don’t build time for at home. (For a full weekend structure, see our [Catskills road trip from NYC itinerary].)

Fall: Peak Foliage Season

If you only visit Windham once, make it the back half of September through mid-October. Foliage here tends to peak earlier than it does farther south in the Hudson Valley, and the payoff is dramatic: ridge-top views along the Catskills Escarpment Trail — including Acra Point, Burnt Knob, and Windham High Peak (3,524 ft) — deliver some of the best color in the Northern Catskills. Windham Mountain’s chairlift also runs seasonally for scenic rides, if you’d rather take in the view without the climb.

Don’t skip Kaaterskill Falls, New York’s highest cascading waterfall, dropping 231 feet in two tiers. The out-and-back trail is about 1.7 miles, mostly easy with one moderate section, and takes roughly an hour round-trip — it gets busy on weekends, but the payoff is worth the crowd. It’s about 20 minutes from Hotel Vienna via Route 296 and 23A.

Fall is also festival season. Windham’s Autumn Affair brings local vendors, food, and live music to Main Street — a nice low-effort way to spend an afternoon between hikes. (For trail-by-trail detail, see our [guide to the best fall foliage hikes near Windham Mountain].)

Where to Stay

However you’re building your Windham trip, the deciding factor is usually the same: how close can you stay to all of it? Hotel Vienna sits on more than 9 acres with direct access to the Windham Path, a mountain deck with unobstructed views, an indoor pool, and multiple fire pits — plus a 4-bedroom home on-site that sleeps up to 12 for group trips. It’s the only hotel near Windham Mountain with that kind of direct trail access, which means less time driving between activities and more time actually on vacation.

Where to Eat

Windham’s food scene is bigger than its size would suggest — classic Italian, farm-to-table seasonal menus, rustic breakfast spots, and a lively Main Street bar scene with live music on select nights.

Planning Your Trip

A few quick logistics:

  • Getting there: About 2.5 hours from NYC via the Thruway and Route 23 — an easy, non-technical drive.
  • Best for skiing: December–March
  • Best for foliage: Late September–mid-October
  • Best for quiet/value: Spring and early summer
  • Best for hiking variety: June–October

No matter which season brings you up, the mountain, the trails, and the town are all within a few minutes of each other — which is really the whole case for Windham as a home base.
